In the late 1980's I wrote a play titled Hyena. Soho Stage West produced the piece in Chicago in 1989 and Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles and the Circle in the Square in New York both expressed interest at that time. In the end, both theatres decided not to produce the play, but the interest certainly inspired me. I decided though to move on to screenwriting, so I could break outside of the limitations of a stage and four walls. Looking at Hyena with fresh eyes, the content is more timely now then it was when I first wrote it. The play began as an exploration of teen-age suicide, but evolved into an indictment of violence and war as illustrated in the social and the emotional arenas. Below you will find an excerpt from the play. Another of my plays, Paper Plane, also written during that time, received a staged reading in Chicago, and it too remains timely. I would love to see Hyena staged again, and I would love to see Paper Plane produced for the first time! I do have some other stage pieces, a few that have been produced, but these are the two that continue to resonate.
